The Cell- Structure and Functions

1. Structure of a Cell

A cell is a small but highly organized structure. Although cells of different organisms may differ in their size, shape, and function, most cells have three basic parts that help them perform their life activities:

  1. Cell Membrane
  2. Cytoplasm
  3. Nucleus

Each part has a specific role, and all three parts work together to keep the cell alive. We can compare a cell with a well-managed factory. A factory has a boundary that protects it, different areas where work is carried out, and a control room that manages all activities. Similarly, a cell also has a protective boundary, a working area, and a control centre.

Please go through following youtube video for details about the Cell Structure and functions (Courtesy: NCERT OFFICIAL youtube)-:

1.1 Cell Membrane – The Protective Boundary

The cell membrane is the outer covering of the cell. It forms a thin protective layer around the cell and separates the internal parts of the cell from the outside environment.

The cell membrane does not act like a completely closed wall. Instead, it works like a security gate that carefully controls what enters and leaves the cell. Only useful substances are allowed to enter, while unwanted materials are removed.

For example, cells need oxygen to release energy from food. Oxygen enters the cell through the cell membrane. Similarly, carbon dioxide and other waste substances produced during cell activities move out through the cell membrane.

The cell membrane performs three important functions:

  • It protects the internal structures of the cell.
  • It controls the movement of substances entering and leaving the cell.
  • It helps maintain a suitable environment inside the cell for different activities.

Without the cell membrane, the cell would not be able to protect itself or control the exchange of materials with its surroundings.

1.2 Cytoplasm – The Working Area of the Cell

Inside the cell membrane, there is a jelly-like substance called the cytoplasm. It fills most of the space inside the cell and provides a place where different cell structures are present.

The cytoplasm is not just a filling material. It is an active part of the cell where many important chemical reactions take place. Different cell organelles remain suspended in the cytoplasm and perform their specific functions.

We can compare cytoplasm with the working area of a factory where different departments carry out different tasks.

For example, when we eat food, our body cells break down nutrients to obtain energy. Many of these chemical processes occur in the cytoplasm with the help of cell organelles.

Thus, cytoplasm acts as a medium that supports the activities of various parts of the cell.

1.3 Nucleus – The Control Centre of the Cell

The nucleus is an important part of the cell that controls and coordinates all activities of the cell. It acts like the control room of a factory where decisions are made and instructions are given.

The nucleus controls processes such as:

  • Growth of the cell
  • Reproduction of the cell
  • Repair of damaged parts
  • Proper functioning of cell activities

The nucleus contains a special substance called DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid). DNA carries genetic information that determines the characteristics of an organism.

For example, features like eye colour, hair type, and many inherited characteristics are controlled by information present in DNA.

This is why the nucleus is considered the control centre of the cell. Without the nucleus, the cell would not be able to coordinate its activities properly.

2. Cell Organelles and Their Functions

Inside the cytoplasm, there are several specialized structures called cell organelles. Each organelle performs a specific function necessary for the survival of the cell.

Just as different departments in a factory perform different tasks such as production, packaging, storage, and transport, cell organelles also work together to keep the cell functioning properly.

Some important cell organelles are:

  • Mitochondria
  • Ribosomes
  • Endoplasmic Reticulum
  • Golgi Apparatus
  • Lysosomes
  • Vacuoles

That’s it for now, we will discuss about these cell organelles in details in next lesson available on www.kidsknowledgenest.com

(Structure of a Cell)

(Cell Membrane)
(Cytoplasm)
(Nucleus)

(Cell Membrane – The Protective Boundary)

(Nucleus – The Control Centre of the Cell)

(Growth of the cell)
(Reproduction of the cell)
(Repair of damaged parts)
(Proper functioning of cell activities)

(Control Centre of the Cell)

(Mitochondria)
(Ribosomes)
(Endoplasmic Reticulum)
(Golgi Apparatus)
(Lysosomes)
(Vacuoles)
